My team, My country, My world cup

When India meets Pakistan in a world cup final, the contest, for all the hype and the nerves, never goes down to who blinks first, for that rarely matters. Most often it is who blinks most. And true to its word, amidst all the flurry of eyelashes batting against each other, in a match that had phases ranging from ‘excellent start’ to ‘defendable total’ to ‘Imran on the rampage’ to ‘cant lose from here’ to ‘where did the huge gap between runs to defend and balls to bowl dissappear?”, it was a oversight by the last man standing for the losers, that his improvised stroke ended up in the hands of the fielder. Obviously, Misbah Ul Haq never knew (he didn’t get the sms I received yesterday) that in ‘every corner of the world, there is a malayalee’!

It is ironical that India has won a ‘world cup’ at the only instance in living memory (I wasn’t around when we won it before) in which the team wasn’t sent with the fanfare, with cricket bats autographed by the players of the 1983 coup, with the team selection played out as ‘predict the team’ contests by the newspapers in advance and over-debated on news channels, with Pepsi ads and its access to the team dressing room. With Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan trying to become one of the 'men in blue', with Shankar Mahadevan claiming allegiance with his corporate sponsored songs. with a good luck dinner by the President of the country, and with thousands of loyal fans waving goodbyes to the aeroplanes in which the team flew away till it disappeared into the skies. Oh why, it wasn’t even a World cup till India actually beat Australia in the semi final. Till then, it was just the T20 world cup, if you can get the difference!

Ironical indeed that even without being in the disastrous form the team was in, approaching the last few legitimate world cups, India wasn’t even counted among the favourites. The event was so insignificant in public perception that three of those who would make any Indian all-time cricket eleven, opted out of the tournament citing without really giving reasons, and none of us really seemed to mind! So insignificant that in the first week of the tournament, the media was more obsessed with the non-playing captain’s resignation than the playing captain’s strategies.

But all that was to change. Change so drastically that the pretty young things that make up CNBC TV18s newsroom spoke, more often than not, in cricket-language on the day of the final, the day after the final, and pretty much the day after the day after the final (We’ll have to wait till tomorrow to see what they have for the day after that). All their newsreaders wore Indian team jersey’s to commemorate the victory, and Mythali Mukherjee made up, atleast in shrieking, for Mandira Bedi’s absence, atleast to the few geeks who are subjected to her all day. (oh btw, did I tell you I get to watch TV at office all day) Even ‘the Hindu’ set aside almost half of its front page for the picture of the Indian team with the trophy. I cant even imagine how the Malayala Manorama would have commemorated its favourite son being the one to hammer the last nail in the Paki coffin, even if that was the only noteworthy thing he did all day.

So India has won a world cup (lets say I don’t mind calling it that)! And boy, aren’t we proud? But should we really be? Did it really matter that the Indian flag being carried around with so called ‘pride’ by females in sports bras (mind you, sponsored by India’s biggest company)? Did we mind - I ask you again, DID WE– mind that the Indian National anthem was not played completely to tune at the start of the match (In case you heard the notes of the first ‘Jaya He’)

Well on the other hand, India has just won a world cup. And in all probability, it wont again, unless the ICC comes up with yet another new format of cricket, and catches our media sleeping. So lets just savour the moment, pretend to own the team, (of course, thanking the BCCI for not depriving us of that pleasure), ignore miniscule issues such as what tune the national anthem is played in, and feel proud to be an Indian. In true Indian fashion!

OMG... Iv got something to cheer everyone at home (and ya, Im going to Kerala on vac this week).. there is a non-mallu who does have a 'thing' for mallu's.. :D usually noone seems to like them.

and ya, i too take inspiration from sportspersons, but i consider the Indians rather tame.. many a time, iv felt if we did in fact5 give blood, we would jus be thrashing the australians every single game. so often, th players look like they just dont care!

What I like about good players is the fact that they never give up... (the best dont know to, say Roger Federer, so often he wins just because he never considers losing.)and the kind of effort they put towards perfection (again Federer)
and I speak about TV just for personal edification.. ya, I too'm a TV freak.. but its just Sport sport sport.. every damn game under the sun. id happily spend every night awake just to watch european football. and wat i see in the office in nower related to the word 'interesting'..

oh u from Kerala???i hav a v good fren who s also a Mathew n from kerala and there is another mallu fren who s v sweet...
oh so u r a mallu...ohhhh...interesting!!
n i dun know abt rest..but there r sooo many mallus in delhi and they r always v popular..i mean at least the ones i hav met!!
actually acc to my experience...there r two kinds of mallus...super-chilled mallu and highly conventional mallu..most of d guys i hav met fall in the former category..!!:-)
u r dealing with stocks..isnt dat awesome!?i think its a pretty excitin job..even m tryin to learnabt stocks..jus like dat!!

P.S. Federer is CUTE!!

hmmm welll.... good to hear that (what category do you think i fit in????)
actually Iv felt that mallu's outside Kerala (especially th ones born and brought up outside) are a really good set. its just the attitudes that most peopl cant adjust with, but that is changing now.

and yeah, stocks are the best things to work with.. like u get to know things real time, see how things actually work in the big world, surf the net all day, and ya, of course, watch TV... :D

but actually 2 years ago, i had as much idea about the stock market as you. you wont believe, i happened to read 2 books, "The Warren Buffet Way" and "One up on wall street" which kind of had me fascinated.. and ya, even now, all the theory i know came from there.. and thats enough! the important thing is dont go to the wrong places to know about the stock market, like lets say, a classroom.. lol

PS. looks like Iv started to write long comments on my own blog also!

feel proud? what for? what did we do? we just watched a very entertaining game instead of a movie or a soap.
though i have seen just 4 overs of 2 matches, i think sreesant is totally crazy (like many mallus)

ps: i dont think even mallus like other mallus very much.

#Rama..
well, even so i thought, till shikha comes and says she knows good mallu's.. of course, there are ppl like me who were seeded in the soil, who you cant help liking, am i not right?

and about pride, well, it was an attempt at satire, in case you didnt realise :) omg i thot i left questions unanswered only when i spoke.. now ppl dont understand what i write too!

Y.M. said...

oh great....am i the only one who likes mallus here!!???
anywy, sreesanth is nt crazy.. n i wont hear anythin against him!!!

:) mallus shouldn't attempt satire. they do badly when it comes to profoundity anyway!
to be fair i probably didnt read carefully since i was in office after barely 4 hrs of sleep.
but what is this abt everyone liking you -- another attempt at satire?
this reminds of the time you used rajni to make fun of tamilians!
@shikha: thot being crazy was the best compliment one could give.

you're missing something.. well, a lot of India are cricket blasphemers, but still, i doubt we would be the same country without this great passion 'cricket'

#Aman
well, thx... and ya, tru Indian way!

#Shikha
Dont bother arguing with Rama, defies logic anyway!

and finally, #Rama
well, when will you ever learn to apreciate something? and say something nice?????

well okay, if you insist
@shikha: SS is the cutest, hottest, umm umm. and it is admirable, this fanscination of yours
@BBE: you dont know how lucky you are
@SBM: cheers to you too
and finally ab: i think you are very funny. the way you chose your topics and make non-existent subjects interesting. and the amazing titles you give

ps: since i cant keep up this tone, i suppose i wont comment anymore. but will be reading all the same :)

OH MY GAWD!!!
(that was for you Rama)

ans Shikha, kuddos, you too got it wrong. Rama isnt a guy! (not a mallu either, before you get that wrong)

and well, I am mad at Rama... she wrote a serialised story on her blog, and removed it after just four days before I could read the climax, and refuses to put it back on!

That said, Rama is the only person who actually reads all of the trash I put on here, comments on it, and yeah, comes back for more!

Y.M. said...

:o I AM SOO SORRY..I M DELETING THAT COMMENT...
I M SOO SORRY , RAMA...I guess I should mind my own business...
sorry AB!!!

I'm not even sure that we could get it on our TV. Maybe You tube.
By the way, you would make an excellent sports journalist!

#BBE
well, i kind of think Rama is right when he says youre lucky not knowing about cricket..
Its like in India, the majority of the population (talk of 1 billion cricket fans is just bullshit..) knows about cricket.. out of this majority, a small portion actually are in love with the game.. a huge huge majority love India in the game.. they follow every moment of team India, cheer when it wins, burst crackers even for a small tournament victory and celebrate as if they themselves won!
they are the people who come out with placards like "cricket is our religion, and Sachin is our God" (ok wait, you ought to google for Sachin - bcos even I cant tell you how great he is.... lol) and if you want a comparison, Cricket controversies make more news here than the collective efforts of all western celebrities, Britney included)

well, then there is th small residue of the original majority, mainly comprising of wives, sisters, daughters and mothers (who know that there are actually better things to watch on TV - like serials which leave them in tears) and ya, some avowed cricket cynics (like Rama and ME) who see cricket as the foolishest obsession Indians could have, though of course, even we join in the victory celebrations...

Ab said...

and ya, about Sports journalist, well, thanks... and I do hope i become a good one (atleast infinitely better than the trash trasher you saw in this post)... but im sure its a vocation I would fit into well, as well as enjoy..

Anonymous said...

yea..even i have similar views on this...seriously did anyone care??...i felt it was some sort of kiddy version of the game...like wot we used to play during our 6th standards!..we used to call it 'leg cricket'!..lol :D Ab, im pretty sure u remember those days! it was funny and weird to hear abt all the hype and the reception ceremony and the cash prize given to players...phew! no wonder the hockey player agitated!

manisha said...

y dnt u write bout womens cricket...:P...he he

Ab said...

#manisha
i could... but then id have to watch the matches right? noone describes womens cricket in the paper like they do men's!

actually, my knowledge of womens cricket is that Anjum Chopra was a former captain and a good all rounder, and that Mythali Raj is among the best players in the world. I forgot the other facts I would have known, say, 3 years ago!
